Definition

Auditory Processing Disorder is an umbrella term for numerous diagnoses like: central auditory processing disorders, auditory perceptual disorders, and central auditory disorders. This difference covers numerous ways the brain interprets sounds. It is not hearing loss. Although that is often where people begin their search for a diagnosis.

Expression:

  • Subtile differences in the sounds of words may not be perceived. It becomes harder in noisy spaces.

Causes include:

  • Ear infection
  • Premature or traumatic birth
  • Seizure disorders/epilepsy
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Lead poisoning
  • Stroke
  • Meningitis
  • Genetics
