L & L Toddler Atrium

Montessori Toddler Community

In ancient times, the atrium was the porch outside of a building where people were educated before going inside to be a part of the community. Our atrium is the same. It is a place for developing skills to be able to mentally, physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually enter more fully into life.

For Toddlers

Over these 3 hours on Monday through Friday, we work to grow our fine and gross motor skills, master self-care, ponder the mysteries of faith, and respond to our world with wonder and joy.

Sensing

Naming

Concentrating

Through carefully chosen materials, the child is introduced to ways to refine their senses. Through dimension and scale, temperature, sound, texture, weight, touch, smell and more, the child isolates and experiments with the various ways humanity experiences the world.

A driving force for this age is the desire to know the names and uses of things. We provide the child with lots of experiences to know the language and explore the items across many areas of their lives.

Finding moments where deep concentration allows for the child to construct themselves. This type of concentration expands over time and provides a platform for resilience and self-reflection.

Maintaining

Engaging

Etiquetting

By learning that they can take care not only of themselves but the prepared environment, the child understands they aren’t just passive receivers in this world. When water spills, we teach the children to notice, evaluate, and restore.

There are many opportunities for the child to take their keen observation skills and apply their practical life skills to engage with the natural and built world. This helps them enter fully into relationships with a sense of co-responsibility.

We aren’t sure if that’s a word, but we offer lots of moments where children experience community, manage disagreements, and learn the skills to prepare for wider communal life.

Who is welcome

Toddlers

We welcome 18 to 30 month old children to apply. If your child will reach 36 months before the end of the spring quarter in April, we’ll need to discuss how to transition your child to a different situation.

We are careful to observe your child’s growth and development. Children become ready transition out of the community at different times as they let us know that they are ready for more challenging work than we can offer.

You are welcome to inquire if we currently have space or for a future year.
